This is one of  the oldest observation stations in Israel.  It was established in 1939, and has been in the same location ever since.  Throughout the years, the station has seen changes in its surroundings, mainly a growth in vegetation.  However, towards the end of the 1950s, high trees were observed in its vicinity, and no significant change has occurred since then.

Today, the station is in an enclosed position, but has the advantage of providing a long series of data collected over the years from the same height and from he same topographical location.  Computerized measurements began in the second half of the 1990s.

Over the years, a Dines-model anemometer (wind gauge) was installed on the roof of the station building, based on a Pitot tube principle – measuring velocity by pressure differences.  On the 12th of March, 1953, this instrument measured an average velocity (during a 10-minute period) of 120 kmh, and this is the highest average wind velocity ever measured in Israel.  On February 8, 1965, this instrument measured a gust of 151 kmh.  The computerized wind gauge was installed several meters to the west of the station, next to a steep and exposed slope facing to the west, and was raised to a height of about 20 meters in order to clear the surrounding vegetation.

The website displays the station’s data on almost every screen:  the hourly observations (including rainfall) are obtained from the automatic station, while the daily rainfall is obtained from the standard rain gauge.  The climatic averages are based on data from the conventional observation station.
